Reconstructive Surgery - Partial Mastectomy

Each year, more than one million women face the reality of breast cancer. Of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer, the majority are eligible for and choose surgery that removes less breast tissue than the entire breast, often referred to as breast conservation surgery or partial mastectomy.

Women who have all or part of their breast removed to treat breast cancer and have subsequent radiation are often left with significant skin damage, tissue loss, pain, and reduction or loss of motion. These complications from the breast cancer treatment compromise the quality of life of these women. Breast reconstruction, a surgical procedure to restore the appearance of the breast, unfortunately has not been a viable option for women with partial mastectomy.

Cytori’s investigational procedure, Cell-Enhanced Reconstruction, may soon offer these patients a treatment approach that helps to lessen the physical and emotional impact of partial mastectomy by permanently restoring the natural appearance of the breast and helping women to regain their sense of femininity.

Clinical studies are currently underway or planned in Japan and Europe for reconstruction of breast tissue following partial mastectomy in breast cancer patients. Clinical studies in the United States are expected to begin within the next few years.
